Suffering from low back pain shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Gardening, a popular outdoor activity this time of year can cause a lot of strain on your lower back. The reason for the strain in your back is that there is a lot of bending, reaching and lifting in gardening. If you enjoy gardening but are worried about the pain in your back, here are some helpful tips that will keep you enjoying your outdoor activity pain free.

Before going outside, it is important to give your body a good stretch. Some light stretches and backbends will help prepare your body for the hard work.

While gardening, it is important to not over do it. Even if you do not have a history of back problems, make sure you practice safe techniques.

Safe Techniques for Gardening

  • Do not lift with your back. Always lift with your legs.
  • Garden in short spurts. Keep it around 20 to 30 minutes and take breaks.
  • Avoid bending over. If you need to be low, such as weeding, try sitting or kneeling while working on the ground. You can support your knees with a yoga matt or rubber pad.

After you are finished, there are some easy ways to alleviate back pain.
